If your old Samsung wearable was looking a bit ratty then we have good news for you. Samsung has announced an update to their Gear S2, predictably called the Gear S3. The Tizen-based smartwatch is set to arrive a full set of specs, not least of which will be LTE (at least in one version of the device). Um… nice.
This year there are two models of Gear S3 coming, the Gear S3 Classic and the Gear S3 Frontier (pictured above). The major difference between the two, besides the more rugged-looking design for the Frontier, is that the Frontier will feature LTE. As such, it’s also going to be a tad heavier than the Classic. Extra components, don’t you know? Samsung has increased the casing size a little too. The Gear S2 was 44mm, the new hardware is 46mm.
Specs that the two devices share are the 1.3-inch AMOLED display (360 x 360), a dual-core 1.0GHz processor, 768MB of RAM, and 4GB of storage. Both versions will feature an accelerometer, gyroscope, heart-rate monitor, barometer, and ambient light sensors, as well as Bluetooth. They’re running on Tizen’s Wearable Platform 2.3.2 and both wristbands are IP68-rated. Samsung has a taste for waterproofing their devices of late.
Samsung says that the 380mAh battery will give users three to four days of battery but we reckon that active LTE will probably take that number down a little. As for getting that little thing back to full power, the Gear S3 supports wireless charging.
While Samsung may have taken the wraps off the Gear S3, that’s all they’ve done. A launch date hasn’t been defined yet, though we should be seeing it before the end of 2016. Pricing… that’ll happen closer to launch day too. Stay tuned. We’re going to try and get our hands on one of these as soon as possible.
