Samsung is gearing up to get away from Android with their wearable technology and one of the first items that will be getting the Tizen treatment is Samsung’s first Galaxy Gear smartwatch. SamMobile has the details of the update on their website as well as the firmware upgrade itself, which will allow users to use many of the features that were introduced with the Galaxy Gear 2 and the Gear Neo.
Upgrading the Galaxy Gear won’t be OTA, users will have to manually download the firmware from locations like SamMobile or by using the Kies software update platform. Just keep in mind that swapping out the Gear’s operating system will result in all of your data vanishing into the ether by the time that the update is complete.
Samsung is also looking at bringing Tizen to their range of smart TVs and, to that end, the company has plans afoot to release a software development kit (SDK) for developers in July. This is a precursor for Samsung’s bringing Tizen-based TVs to customers, although the date we can expect Samsung’s own OS to take over screens hasn’t been made known yet.
