Two of the newest opponents in the mobile patent wars have called off their side of the conflict. Recent legal action between RIM and Nokia has been suspended thanks to a newly announced license agreement between the two companies.
Research in Motion’s agreement with Nokia, which involves “a one-time payment and on-going payments, all from RIM to Nokia”, has led to the ending of all existing patent litigation between the two companies as well as “withdrawal of pending actions in the US, UK and Canada related to a recent arbitration tribunal decision.”
Nokia’s chief intellectual property office Paul Melin said in a statement “We are very pleased to have resolved our patent licensing issues with RIM and reached this new agreement, while maintaining Nokia’s ability to protect our unique product differentiation. This agreement demonstrates Nokia’s industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.”
