The recent notification that American retailers are taking pre-orders for the Ouya Android-powered console and that pre-orders are expected to ship by June this year has broken the silence around the new gaming device.
Now it seems that there is a lot more where that came from, with Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman saying that there will be a new model of the console available on a yearly basis.
Speaking to Engadget Uhrman said that “[t]here will be a new OUYA every year. There will be an OUYA 2 and an OUYA 3.”
“We’ll take advantage of faster, better processors, take advantage of prices falling. So if we can get more than 8GB of Flash in our box, we will.”
That doesn’t mean that buyers will be at the mercy of the hardware. Uhrman says that all games for the device will be backwards compatible and that these games will be “tied to you, the gamer”, much like how a Steam account allows users to access their gaming library from any computer with an internet connection.
The current hardware inside the Ouya console will feature a quad-core1.6Ghz A9 Tegra 3, making it “the best Tegra 3 device on the market” and it is likely that later versions will pack in NVidia’s Tegra 4 setup.
