Netflix users around the world could be looking at a pricing increase in the near future, though comments by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings suggest that those who are already subscribers will be exempt from any increases for a certain period.
Hastings, in a letter to shareholders concerning the first quarter of 2014, said that “Our current view is to do a one or two dollar increase, depending on the country, later this quarter for new members only.” The Verge reports that established Netflix users will see their subscription costs remaining unchanged from this increase for a “generous” period of time.
The company has already trialled an increase in subscription costs in Ireland, where new users have seen the price bump up by €1 compared to the monthly costs seen by established subscribers. The current increase seems to be a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’ but at least the company’s price hike doesn’t look like it will put the streaming video service out of reach of the average person.
