Meet the faster, stronger, better Raspberry Pi 4 starting at R580

The Raspberry Pi foundation surprised the world of DIY engineers with an unexpected announcement of its new Raspberry Pi 4 today. It has an updated processor, up to 4GB of RAM, can support dual 4k-displays all at a starting price of just R580.

“Do not ingest”

Although it sounds tasty, this little gadget can be used to build anything from a server to combat robots or an M&M colour-coordinator. The newly announced version is fitted with something called “a desktop-grade” 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU, along with ports for two 4K monitors. The base model has 1GB RAM, then there’s one with 2GB and the top-range 4GB version.

The new Raspberry Pi has also made the welcome move to USB-C from USB-A port. Let’s face it — USB-C is the new black after all. The foundation has also overhauled the Debian software with a new interface and support for Chromium 74.

We’ve checked on the local supplier, PiShop’s website, and we’ve got South African pricing. The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 1GB will cost R580, the 2GB is priced at R745, and the 4GB only R911. They’re currently listed as ‘out of stock’, but we’ll likely see them available in coming weeks.
