Dolby’s Atmos tech now in bar form with Yamaha’s YSP-5600
We like cinemas. Not because of the people, the food or the air conditioning (all of which frequently suck) but because of the screen size and the sound. The glorious, rumbling sound. Dolby’s Atmos technology, previously the domain of the cinema, is going to be heading to the home with Yamaha’s newly-announced YSP-5600 sound bar, the first to incorporate Atmos in a teeny form factor. There are still 44 speakers in Yamaha’s array, for 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos surround in the home. The cost? It starts at R23,000.

Twitter bots attempting to keep protestors in Mexico down
So you think that social media is a good thing? It often can be but its powers are not always used for good. Sometimes social media can be turned to destructive ends. Like we’re seeing at the moment in Mexico, where Twitter bots are swamping a protect channel by spamming the #YaMeCanse (“I am tired”) hashtag with nonsense – effectively cutting off protestor communication. This is, sadly, a trend in that part of the world. It’s also too involved to sum up here, see Wired‘s Klint Finley’s detailed writeup.

Telkom’s new ADSL line offering is… pretty cheap
Telkom has a couple of new products on the way, ADSL-wise, in the form of new speeds that will be added to their Resell DSL lineup. Actual official pricing or data costs haven’t been detailed for the new speeds, which are 1Mbps and 8Mbps respectively. but there is a cost excluding VAT known. The 1Mbps service will come in at about R50 per month and the 8Mbps cost will be around R300 per month. This is just the pricing for line-rental for these speeds, by the look of things, but even so… that’s impressively low for a DSL line.
