Ever since Da Vinci scientists have looked up into the sky and wished they could pedal up to a cloud or something. Some are so serious about human powered flight the the Igor I. Sikorsky Human Powered Helicopter Competition offered $250,000 to the first team to build a person-powered craft that can hover above 3 meters (or 9.8 feet) for longer than a minute. The prize was first offered in 1980 and went unclaimed for 33 years.
Yesterday the AeroVelo launched their Atlas helicopter and the flight, which lasted for 64 seconds and went up to 3.3 meters in the air, was just certified by the Sikorsky Prize judges.
