Imagine being anywhere in the world — from a small market in Madrid to the river on your uncle’s farm in Vryburg. Wherever you happen to be, that spot can be tracked using what3words, and pinpointed down to a three metre area. And the really exciting bit is that iStores in South Africa will now be using this service to improve deliveries. What3words is a different take on maps and addressing technology — the service has divided the world into 57 trillion 3m x 3m squares and assigned each square a unique three word address. It is accurate enough that preferred…

Okay, gaming is becoming portable, we get it. But really, this portable? It’s not like mobile phones optimised for gaming aren’t already on our Christmas list. It just feels like the gaming community isn’t quite as ready for them as some companies seem to be hoping. First we saw the Razer phone earlier this year, and now Xiaomi has launched its Black Shark device, which is — you guessed it — a mobile gaming phone. Frankly, we’re still not quite sure how to feel about it. Mobile gaming since the GameboyToday we have had a whole line up of portable…

The new Huawei flagship phones are only a few weeks old, and already the company has announced plans to add some value to the deal for users who buy one of the devices in the P20 range, which includes the P20, P20 Lite, and the beast that is the P20 Pro. It is called the Huawei Diamond VIP Service and if it is as fancy as it sounds, we’re probably in for a treat. According to Huawei, the total value of this service rounds up to just under R4,000 – how the company determined the value of this is not…

Nokia is officially back and making waves in the mobile phone world. Last year we saw the return of the 3310, and more recently an updated version of the infamous banana-phone (or 8110, if you prefer the official name). On the “smarter” side of things, Nokia mobile’s parent company HMD Global has announced details of its entry-level smartphone, the Nokia 1. Though it’s a smartphone and not a feature phone, the Nokia 1 is powered by Android Oreo Go Edition, a lightweight version of Android for devices with 1GB of RAM or less that takes up less memory and helps keep data use down…

Google today launched Google Go in Sub-Saharan Africa (which includes South Africa, in case you were wondering), a service which will provide users with a ‘lighter’ way to search. Specifically aimed at users who do not own flagship smartphones or people who just want to watch their data usage, Google Go is a search engine — basically like the conventional Google search found in most Android devices — but it has been optimised to use less data, device memory and also to run basic processes faster. There is an emerging market in African of users acquiring feature devices, or smart…

Spotify, the music-streaming service that went public on Wall Street last week and launched in SA just last month, has decided to beef up its free tier for music listeners to try and source more subscribers — we all start out on a free account, after all. Sources at Bloomberg said that the Stockholm company is changing the free service to make it more accessible, adding more features that were previously only available to paid subscriptions. Their main focus is to reach more users who prefer listening to music on mobile devices. These plans are still technically under-the-radar, (so sshhh),…

Apple has just announced the rollout of a new special edition red iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, and Samsung has done the same for the Galaxy S8 and S8+. Nope, we are not in the Twilight Zone. This might just be a bizarre coincidence, but two new red devices from the two largest smartphone makers in the world, announced within hours of each other, smacks of some competitive behaviour. Or at least it would if one of the handsets wasn’t severely region-limited. But hey, at least everyone has some crimson options on hand, whether they’re buried neck-deep in the Apple or Android…
