My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 owners got the first taste of Fortnite on Android a few months ago. And after that the only way to gain access to the game was by receiving a coveted ‘invite’ from Epic Games. That’s changed, finally.  Now almost anyone with Android 8.0 Oreo or higher (to find out if you have a compatible device, head here) can download and play the battle royale game on their mobile. Fortnite tweeted a link late yesterday with a few easy-to-follow steps to getting on the bus. https://twitter.com/FortniteGame/status/1050403746499452928 If you happen to open the link on a desktop just make…

The Fujifilm X-T3 landed in South Africa at the beginning of October. We were fortunate enough to get one of the first units, so we unboxed it immediately, of course. This is a great upgrade to the X-T2, which we absolutely love. The X-T3 has a 26.1MP APS-C sensor, it shoots 4K video, is fitted with a very nifty USB-C port and of course, a headphone jack. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSimlJG1VC4 Review unit supplied by Fujifilm South Africa.

[UPDATE: The name-change feature is now available — 11 April 2019. The ID change comes with a warning, though. Players who do decide change their online names may encounter a few issues ranging from minor to critical on certain games (see the list here). So change your ID at your own risk.] ORIGINAL STORY: Tempted to change your name? You can choose to change everything from your Twitter handle to your actual name on your ID book, but PlayStation players haven’t been able to change their gamer-tags since its inception. And that’s changing. Finally, this long-awaited feature is launching in…

Earlier this year Apple announced that they are producing their own range of original shows. And initially, it sounded like a strange thing — for Apple to go up against the likes of Netflix and Amazon, but now it looks like they just want to spoil their users… or further ingrain their loyalty. Anyone with an Apple device, be it iPhones, iPads, or Apple TVs (but not Macs, for reasons unknown), will receive free access to the fruit company’s streaming service. It’ll be available starting next year sometime — and will be accessed from a ‘TV’ app that’ll magically appear…

Data security is a sensitive subject when it comes to anything Facebook-related — but the company might’ve done something security-related that is worth mentioning for Instagram-users. You’ll now be able to set up two-factor authentication (2FA) for Insta, without using the ancient — and less secure — SMS-based system. Starting this week, users can implement third-party authenticator apps to add an additional layer to an account. This is important, because SMS-based 2FA  is especially vulnerable to SIM hijacking/SIM swap attacks. These authenticator apps (like Google Authenticator and Authy) allow you to generate a code or send a prompt as a…

The world is quickly moving towards not owning any physical content — we’ve gone from downloading and copying movies and series from various sources, to streaming everything on Netflix and Showmax. So what’s the obvious next step? Streaming games, obviously — well, that’s what PlayStation, Google and now Microsoft believe. Recently, Google launched a game streaming service test called Project Stream, and now Xbox is on the bandwagon with Project xCloud — and the project kinda makes sense for Big M. Good old Microsoft has the infrastructure to bring game streaming to more countries than PlayStation Now currently reaches.   Project…

It’s been a rough few weeks for Facebook’s execs. Instagram lost its founders last week, and after a new CEO for the image-sharing platform was appointed, the app crashed worldwide for an hour (probably not related, but still embarrassing). Oh, and there was a massive hack of over 50 million users’ accounts on Facebook. While Facebook tries to figure out exactly what user data may have been stolen, they decided to make it even harder for users to leave the platform. Because when the folks you may have caused losses for attempt to leave, you just lock the doors, right? Facebook is extending…

Apple’s announcements in September might not have impressed some users, especially after Apple decided to put pretty excessive price tags on their two high-end devices. But there was a third. The iPhone we are most excited about is the iPhone XR. And we can now confirm it is coming to South Africa on 26 October this year. X’R Us iStore South Africa has confirmed that the more affordable option in Apple’s 2018 lineup will be available locally soon, with pre-orders open from 19 October. Unfortunately we don’t have local pricing at this stage, but we have reached out to iStore SA…
