My gamertag is more useful than a business card. I write about the tech industry, hardware, software, games, and motoring.

Earlier this year, Cell C entered into an agreement with MTN to expand its network coverage in areas where one bar just isn’t good enough. People still talk about bars and phones without using the words “I left my phone in a bar”, right? Because of this deal, FNB Connect customers will also gain more network coverage. FNB Connect is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) that piggybacks on Cell C’s network. MTN will provide additional 3G and 4G services to Cell C around South Africa as a result of the deal, services that are going to be passed on…

First there was just cloud storage, where you could keep your files at an off-site and ‘lofty’ location and little else, and now it’s possible to do just about anything with files stored in versatile applications like Dropbox and Google Drive. Can it get better? Yes it can. Dropbox has announced a new feature called Extensions, that integrates specific third-party software apps into the service. This will allow users to use things like Adobe Suite, DocuSign, Autodesk and Vimeo directly from Dropbox. “Dropbox is home to hundreds of billions of PDF, DWG, and multimedia files, so we’re in a perfect…

Almost exactly a year ago popular battle royale first-person shooter, Player Unknown’s Battlegounds (PUBG), made its debut on console — the Xbox One, that is. And now it’s free on Xbox One, for a while at least. We will also likely see it release on PS4 soon, according to rumour. Can’t have the PS4 players missing out on those chicken dinners, can we? Previously only available on PC, PUBG has definitely aided in the massive boom of battle royale games. Now it’ll be available on most platforms, and hopefully soon on all of them (winks at Nintendo awkwardly). Microsoft has…

Yahoo-owned photo sharing service Flickr is implementing a few drastic changes to its service that would see users’ content disappear if they don’t act soon. Flickr has decided to reduce the cloud storage capacity for their free-tier users. What was once 1TB will be skimmed down to a mere 1000-picture capacity., with plans to start deleting excess images early next year if users fail to clear up their accounts first. Andrew Stadlen, VP of Product at Flickr, published a blog post explaining the changes. Free storage users will lose access to all pictures that exceed the 1000-picture limit from February 2019. The…

This year, Activision made the bold move of removing the campaign mode from their new Call of Duty instalment. And while opting for online gaming and zombies sounded controversial at release, we actually think they are onto something here. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is the most recent addition to the first-person-shooter series, made by Treyarch — the guys best known for 2008’s World at War and, of course, all the Black Ops titles. At launch, the developers said they wanted to make ‘the most replayable game ever’, and that’s exactly what they did. Stop campaigning Black Ops has always…

Earlier this year, Elon Musk mentioned that The Boring Company’s LA-based underground tunnel will be operational in December. It sounded outrageous and impossible. But nothing is impossible for the Musk. Musk posted a video on Twitter showing the ‘disturbing’ length of the current tunnel, which seems to be nearing operation. He said that the 10 December opening is still on track and that he plans to have an ‘opening party’. We’re making a guess that it’ll be an underground party. https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1058767039102312448 The Boring Company started construction on the 2 mile (3.2km) tunnel a year ago. It stretches from the Space X…

Hopefully you’ve started transitioning to an alternative messaging service, because WhatsApp Vice-president Chris Daniels recently confirmed that the service will start showing ads. After the departure of both founders (who were against the idea of monetisation through ads), the company has decided that it’s time to flood the only safe space you had left with adverts. The ads will only be displayed in the Status tab, but regardless of placement, the move still feels unwelcome. “We are going to be putting ads in ‘Status.’ That is going to be [the] primary monetisation mode for the company as well as an…

Social media users all know the struggle of scrolling through the same five posts you saw an hour ago, over and over again. That’s the joy of an algorithmically-sorted feed but it’s not something you have to live with. Not on Twitter. Not any more. The company’s CEO, Jack Dorsey, has confirmed that they’re bringing back the chronological timeline. The company said that it’s testing a button to display tweets by post time, instead of showing an algorithmically-picked feed. This will give users the ability to toggle between algorithmic and chronological. The power is in your hands now. This feature…

The highly anticipated third-generation iPad Pro was announced at Apple’s event yesterday evening, and it looks to be a very capable design tablet. Its new Adobe Photoshop capability, along with the updated Apple Pencil that now charges wirelessly via magnetic attachment, will make it any designer’s dream machine. Unfortunately, in the Apple tradition of selling accessories you really need separately — you’ll need to buy the new Apple Pencil if you’re planning on owning the newest iPad Pro. Your old Apple Pencil isn’t compatible with the new iPad Pro, according to product descriptions on the Apple website. The update was…

Okay, you don’t have to sell your house right now, but it’s kinda nice to have the option. From today, users can list and sell their homes directly to other FNB clients via the existing ‘Nav>>Home’ portal in the FNB app. A simple and secure listing feature in the Nav section of the app gives FNB clients the ability to upload details of the property you’re looking to sell, which will be familiar to anyone who’s used other property listing websites. The important factor here is that buyers will be people who already qualify for a loan and has been…
