Fibre infrastructure company Vumatel has announced it’s in the process of rolling out thousands of smart CCTV cameras around Johannesburg’s suburbs via a subsidiary called Vumacam. It plans to deploy up to 15,000 cameras around the city, capable of capturing ultra-high-definition footage the company then plans to sell to security companies. The project is a joint venture between Vumatel and Imfezeko Holdings and has rolled out to over 900 poles (each of which can house multiple cameras) to date.

LG’s latest phablet, the V40 ThinQ, will go on sale in South Africa on 7 February with an impressively aggressive price point of R12,500. Vodacom will have the sole mandate for the device for the first quarter of this year. You’ll only be able to get the V40 in one colour, “Moroccan Blue”. Thankfully, it’s rather fetching, though. Last week the company announced its Adapt BB footwear will come to market on 17 February 2019 with a recommended price tag of $350 (around R4,800). The bad news? South African pavement pounders will soon be able to track their runs via their footwear because sportswear maker Under Armour has announced it’s bringing one of its connected shoes to our market next month. The Under Armour HOVR Infinite has a sensor embedded in the midsole of the right shoe and connects via low-energy Bluetooth to the MapMyRun app on the wearer’s smartphone. The fancy footwear goes on sale this month at a recommended retail price of R2 500.
