You can now renew your vehicle licence disk online with Pick n Pay – here’s how

An increased number of South African institutions are launching initiatives to help citizens go about daily life. We’re talking about things South Africans have to complete on a regular basis, like vehicle licence disk renewals. If you own a vehicle, you have to renew those disks annually. Retailer Pick n Pay has launched a system to help.

The retail group is trialling a new system that will allow motorists the ability to renew their vehicle licence disks. The system functions either in-store or online.

According to the group, customers throughout South Africa can visit a store to renew the vehicle licence disk. This includes the ability to pay for any outstanding fines that could block a disk renewal. It’ll serve the same function the Post Office currently does in terms of renewals. But now you can do it while doing your monthly shopping, or just pop in for a melkie. For a price, of course.

Because this renewal isn’t being done via a government channel, motorists will wait up to 10 business days to receive the renewed licence, via courier. The disk will be delivered to your address of choice, according to official info.

    Renewing licences, made easy

While in a Pick n Pay, customers can register using their phone number at any cash register. The online system allows for registration at this link, too. You don’t need to enter a store for the latter method.

Once your profile is set up, you’ll have to upload an image of your ID document or card, a copy of your existing vehicle licence disc, and proof of residence.

Following the admin detailed above, you’ll just have to add a payment method or pay in-store for the renewal. “You can then set up a payment for your vehicle licence renewal and select to make payment in a Pick n Pay store. Your vehicle licence disc renewal payment will include the following, which is automatically added to your payment amount,” the website explains.

Once payment has been confirmed, the disk renewal process is underway. You’ll find a brand new vehicle licence disk on your stoep within 10 business days.

How much poorer will you be?

Again, because this is a private institution and not a governmental one, it’s all about making money for itself. Pick n Pay will charge a service fee over and above the licence renewal cost – which is based on your vehicle and its class.

So the cost is *whatever your vehicle licence disk renewal cost is* + a R345 (incl VAT) service fee + a R99 (incl VAT) delivery fee.
