Google has announced its annual statistics concerning web search around the world. And locally we’re not even surprised, because most of the top Google search terms for South Africa in 2018 mirror the real issues that South Africans experience on a daily. Here’s a breakdown of the search company’s Year in South African Search.
The Google year review looks at the top searches in a few categories, like what people, places, and things locals searched for the most. Even which questions folks asked Google in times of need (with surprisingly many requests for the nearest Nandos).
South Africans mostly displayed interest in local and international celebrities this year, and a smattering of local news and events. Six of the top ten searches were specific to SA: load shedding, Global Citizen, Zuma, Winnie Mandela, HHP, and of course deadly polony (listeriosis).
The top personalities list includes three politicians, two sports stars, and the other five relate to current affairs and news events. It is clear that South Africans keep up to date with political climate and current events in their country.
