Are you ready to build and shoot and build some more? From today you will be able to sign up to be in line for an invitation to the iOS Fortnite Battle Royale beta. Why would you want this invitation? Because Fortnite is changing the (literal) game of multiplayer dynamics.
We have seen a massive surge in free-to-play online games like Paladins and Fortnite that are changing ideas around paying for quality gaming. Or ‘not paying’, if we’re being totally accurate. The focus specifically is on quality because these aren’t the free games like those found on demo discs back in the day (remember those?). These are well-developed games that people enjoy based on excellent visuals and well-designed content — they just happen to include smaller micro-payments for in-game enhancements like boosts and visual alterations. You know, in case you feel like buying something.
Fortnite officially launched on consoles late last year, followed shortly afterwards by Fortnite Battle Royale which aimed to bring the world PUBG-esque gaming for free. There were, as you may have guessed, words exchanged between the PlayerUnknown BattleGrounds camp and Fortnite fans. Thankfully, that’s now all in the past… right?
Now Epic are launching Battle Royale on iOS, and “support for Android will be coming in the next few months”, according to the developer. This will open a gaming genre to folks that haven’t really seen it before, namely those who do not have the means or desire to buy a console or gaming PC. They’ll still be able to play with the big boys, though. The mobile versions of the game will play nice with PC, PS4, or iOS players via Cross Play, though fans on PS4 and Xbox One still won’t be able to verse each other… awww…
To get access to the iOS game, you will need to sign up here ( the link goes live some time from 12 March) and wait for an invitation that will be sent to your email. It seems like this is an invite-only type deal, so be sure to sign up for it — and bring your friends on the bus, since you’ll also get a friend code or three with your invite. All you need is an internet connection and iOS 11 on at least an iPhone 6S/SE, iPad Mini 4, iPad Pro, iPad Air 2, or iPad 2017 device… for now.
