Apex Predator: Acer’s new gaming desktop wants to scramble to the top of the food chain

Acer’s Predator range has always been very good at one thing in particular: looking the part. The Predator series has always looked extremely aggressive but for once it might fully live up to its title — the newly-unveiled Acer Predator Orion 9000 is set to be a beast of a desktop PC.

Even though the name sounds like it was drawn from a hat filled with badass military codenames, the Predator Orion 9000 has something going for it besides looks that suggest it’ll spring to life and enslave humanity one day.

It’s got enough power to make even the electronically jaded lift their eyebrows — provided you’re willing to pay for it. Gamers in search of a few extra frames will be able to outfit the Orion 9000 with an Intel Core i9 Extreme Edition processor, which features up to 18 cores and 32 threads, an Nvidia 1080Ti SLI arrangement, and up to 128GB of DDR 2666 RAM. Just the basic specs roster is cause to be impressed.

The chassis is mighty fancy to boot, with Acer’s Ice Tunnel 2.0 tech dividing the internals into thermal zones for more effective cooling. Besides the internal fans, the Orion 9000 can be fitted with Cooler Master liquid cooling — pretty much a must for the top-spec machine — and the chassis also features side-panels that provide protection from electromagnetic interference. If that’s (somehow) a problem for you, the new Predator will make sure it’s less of one. Oh, and the modular chassis also has wheels so you can move your case around more easily.

The Acer Predator Orion 9000 will be launching internationally in February this year, with the pricing being subject to system configuration. If you’re gunning for the best hardware Acer can provide, you’re going to have to take out a car-worthy bank loan.
