Your Nintendo Switch just got smarter

Nintendo’s Switch has always been a good console, all the way back to launch day, but it wasn’t perfect. It still isn’t, truth be told, but it has managed to get a little better than it was.

A new system update has brought along features that have been missing from the Switch, notably the ability to record video and transfer save files.

The save-file transfer feature was a no-brainer, since it sucks to lose your progress just because Fate has decided to send a bear to maul your Switch’s display beyond repair. Actually transferring your data is a slightly complex process but is no more onerous than transferring all of your 3DS data to a new microSD card. Nintendo has a complete explainer here.

In order to record, users have to hold down the dedicated image capture button, which will capture the previous 30 seconds of play. The video recording is limited to just 30 seconds per clip and currently only works for four games: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, ARMS, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Splatoon 2. Remember what we said about the console not being perfect yet? Still, more games are expected to be supported in future updates. For now, you can chronicle that totally-not-fair Blue Shell that cost you the Mario Kart 8 win, again, and share it with the world so that they can all feel your pain.
