The Galaxy S8 is selling really, really well

Samsung’s Galaxy S8 is selling really well — even before the handset is officially on-sale in most of the world. And this is in spite of, and perhaps the company wishes that people would shut up about this, the events of 2016 which saw the Note 7 being released to much fanfare, only to blow up in Samsung’s (and a few customers’) faces.

You’d think that having to undergo a high-profile product recall would have damaged Samsung’s brand. Indeed, that has been the worry ever since the smartphone maker had to replace all those Note 7s. But it seems that most of those worries have been for naught, as Samsung says that pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 and the S8 Plus are up compared to last year.

How much, exactly? Samsung Electronics’ Tim Baxter, COO for the company’s American arm, seems to think that folks are more pleased with Samsung than ever, saying, “The market has responded — with a more than 30 percent year-over-year growth in preorders versus the record preorders we had with Galaxy S7, making it our best ever.”

Not the reaction you’d expect from a company reeling after the beating that they took last year with the whole recall thing. It looks as though Samsung is pulling a Rocky, having taken 2016 on the chin and coming back stronger than ever. We’ll be looking for actual sales figures in about a month but the S8 is on-track to be a record-breaker all round.

It’s hard to see why the company’s coming back strong. We’ve spent some time (though not enough) with the Galaxy S8 and the S8 Plus and what we’ve seen so far has basically left our jaws on the floor. Watch out for a full review soon.
