Light Start – Thinking with portals, Note 7 weekend, Logan, and Tides combat

Now Red Bull is thinking with portals

If you haven’t played Valve’s Portal or the sequel, Portal 2, then this Red Bull-created video of cyclists hitting jumps before vanishing into portals and popping out somewhere completely different might be a touch jarring, mentally. Your brain tells you everything is normal but also that nothing is working the way it should. Should you know how to think with portals, though, then this mini-clip is the best downhill mountain biking you’ll see all month. Hit the link below to catch the video. And relax, folks. It’s Friday.

Samsung will detail the Note 7’s explosion cause on Monday in Seoul

Note 7 recallIt’s about time (not that we aren’t pretty sure what’s coming). Samsung is going to be holding a press conference in Seoul at 10:00 on Monday morning. That’s 23 January, for the people who prefer more accurate time-keeping, but due to time differences we’re going to find out about it here at around 3:00 in the morning on Monday. We’re okay with waiting a few hours to find out what we already know — that the battery was the culprit in all of Samsung’s problem devices.  What we’re hoping to hear is just why the battery was the problem. Was it a manufacturing fault, an engineering mistake, or something else entirely? Perhaps Samsung will actually have a surprise in store for us. Either way, we’re looking at some closure next week.

Logan’s second trailer sees Wolverine dealing with a dangerous little girl

We get that some of the Wolverine films starring Hugh Jackman weren’t… all that fantastic. That said, we actually liked X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Sue us. But Logan looks set to make every film in the series looks positively tame, if the second trailer is any indication. And it’s going to be filled with feels, too. Charles Xaviar is on his last legs (so to speak) and Logan is protecting him somewhere remote, as he tends to do. Then a new mutant, a little girl (otherwise known as X-23), shows up and the Wolverine is dragged back into what he does best. Violently removing threats to those he loves. Just… just watch the trailer, okay? Logan will be wending an emotional (and violent) way into our heart in March this year.

Time for some Torment: Tides of Numenera combat

For those who don’t know, Torment: Tides of Numenera is the successor to one of the best role-playing games ever to grace the PC — Planescape: Torment. If you don’t know what that is, go and educate yourself. We’ll see you in about… six months. Or you can wait till next month, when Torment launches. It’s a standalone and well worth your time, as the combat gameplay video shows. Players will have various ways to resolve conflicts, including just talking to people, but there are intimidation tactics, special abilities (that come with a price) and just plain old blood-letting to get you by. And if you die… well, death isn’t the end. Not by a long shot. Torment: Tides of Numenera will launch on 28 February, on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
