Apple’s October 2016 MacBook Pro refresh got up the noses of a lot of people, with the company dropping the ports that made the notebook line a favourite with a certain type of user (anyone who, you know, wanted to connect equipment to the Pro for example). Then there were other considerations, like the hardware upgrade not being quite as impressive as users might have liked. Well, Apple’s got a chance to rectify that, if reports about a pending refresh for 2017 are any indication.
KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said in a note to investors that the company will be introducing an upgraded MacBook Pro for 2017 that addresses at least some of the issues of the recently-launched device. Unfortunately that doesn’t include your ports, those seem to be gone for good, but more memory and upgraded processors might do something to assuage the blow.
Apple is expected to roll out MacBook hardware featuring Intel’s new Kaby Lake processors, including the MacBook Pro. The first of these, in Windows machines, have landed in South Africa already. Also coming is an RAM update — Apple is expected to raise the Pro’s RAM cap from 16GB (which was done to save battery, it seems) to 32GB. Video editors will be pleased. The 12in MacBook will also be getting a RAM bump, said Kuo, to 16GB.
As to when we can expect this bigger, better MacBook Pro, Kuo predicts that production will likely start in Q3 2017 so don’t count on getting your hands on one until the new iPhone is out on the market, at the very least. Still, it’s a step in the right direction.
