If you missed out on 2012’s Far Cry 3 and the subsequent expansion, Blood Dragon, then you missed out on a treat. Especially if you were a child of the 1980s, in which case you missed out on a nostalgia trip hard enough to make your sides hurt. And you’ve got a chance to play it for free, if you missed it the first time.
Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon is a standalone expansion of open-world shooter Far Cry 3 but that’s about as close as the two games come. The main game has you playing as a scared (at first) student lost in a tropical paradise where everything wants to kill him. Blood Dragon puts you into the boots of Rex ‘Power’ Colt, a cyborg killing machine who has to decimate everything in his way. The setting? A purple neon neo-future where everything comes from an 80s prop department and there are freaking great big glowing radioactive dragons everywhere.
If this looks and sounds like something that you have to play (trust us, you really, really have to play it) then hold your horses for a week or so. Publisher Ubisoft will be giving the game away, free of charge, to Ubisoft Club members as part of the company’s 30-year anniversary. And Ubisoft Club… is free to sign up to. You do the math.
If you want to get your 80s cyborg action hero on, just check in on Ubisoft from 9 November this year and add Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon to your (free) Ubisoft Club account. Or head there right now and get hold of the equally good (for different reasons) Beyond Good and Evil. These have an expiry date, though, so don’t mess around.
