Halloween might be a thing that we don’t really do here in SA (you try going house-to-house in a costume in Jozi and see where it gets you) but that doesn’t mean we will let this themed Pokémon Go event pass us by.
Creators Niantic have announced their first limited-time themed event for the augmented reality game and it revolves around the spooky end-October goings-on that involve ghosts and other paranormal critters. And, as luck would have it, Pokémon Go includes more than a few compatible creatures. Players will be seeing more of them between 26 October and 1 November this year.
So this is how it’s going to go down. The game will include greater spawn chances for Gastly, Gengar, and Haunter (all Ghost-types), and we’ll apparently also see more Drowzee and Zubat appearances. Hands up, anyone who doesn’t have a Zubat yet? No-one? Huh…
Players will also be earning more candy during the event, whether it’s from catching pokémon or trading them over to the professor. Even that fits the theme, if you’re an American kid with an impending tooth problem. Well, perhaps not the trading part. Players will earn double the amount of candy for all actions, but they can increase that to four times the usual amount by using a buddy pokémon — that’s a newer feature where you choose a single critter to accompany you like your very own Pikachu.
This should just be the start of events in Pokémon Go. We can expect them to start popping up for all the major American holidays: Christmas, Easter, that thing where everyone goes shopping at night… Will it snag Niantic some new or returning players? We’ll let you know next week.
