The Pokémon Go Plus peripheral device has been delayed till September

What, you thought it was all about the app? Nope, there’s a Pokémon Go Plus device on the way and judging by how many people are playing Pokémon Go, the device should be a hit. But you’re going to have to wait a little longer than the original July launch date, as Nintendo have announced a delay. American Pokémon trainers can expect to get their hands on a Go Plus in September this year.

The #PokemonGO Plus accessory will now be released Sept 2016 instead of the originally expected end of July launch. https://t.co/QgjZf1aAV6

The Pokémon Go Plus is a device that is being made by Nintendo. It’s point is to allow users to play Pokémon Go without having their smartphone in front of their eyeballs at all times. The Pokémon Go Plus can be worn on clothing or on the user’s wrist and connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth. When there are Pokémon or Pokéstops nearby the device lights up, which should lead to fewer Pikachu-related collisions in the park.

The Pokémon Go Plus has been delayed, according to Nintendo, in order to make sure that the wearable will function correctly with the hugely-popular app. Nintendo said “The delay is due to the preparations for the Pokémon Go application update in order to optimize Pokémon Go Plus. In order for us to offer new experiences to play Pokémon Go with Pokémon Go Plus with a quality level high enough to satisfy as many people as possible, we decided that it is necessary to take enough time for the completion.”

At launch the Pokémon Go Plus will retail for $35, or about R500 in South African currency. Nintendo hasn’t announced any plans to release it locally yet. We’ll probably have to wait for the app’s official launch before that information lands.
