Microsoft has been going all out to convince Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users to upgrade to Windows 10 before the end of July this year, which is when their free upgrade offer cuts off. And some people just aren’t listening, no matter how intrusive Microsoft’s reminders are.
But you haven’t seen anything yet. Or perhaps you have. The final pop-up before the free upgrade cut-off isn’t going to be an easily ignored in-the-corner effort. Instead, Microsoft plans to interrupt your work with a full-screen pop-up that will ask if users wish to upgrade to Windows 10 immediately or whether they would prefer to wait. But at least there’s an option for dismissing the reminder altogether, even if the pop-up is going to overtake your display (probably at an inopportune moment).
The company got into a spot of trouble recently by burying the option to reject the upgrade outright and making a large red X, the traditional close-this-freaking-window option, function as a why-certainly-you-can-install-Windows-10 option, leading to several unwanted Windows 10 installations. In fact, the company has already had to pay out at least one user for installing Windows 10 when it wasn’t wanted.
At least, come 29 July, it’s almost over. Then those folks who are comfortable with their Windows 7 or Windows 8 installations won’t have to boot up in trepidation any longer, hoping that Microsoft hasn’t just changed things when they weren’t looking. Unless Microsoft extends the free upgrade deadline for some reason…
