Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 is coming into focus – Here’s what we know

We’re about a month out from the official Samsung Galaxy Note 7 (or 6) reveal and the web is alive with the sound of rumours. We’ve already had a substantial look at what various sources claim we’re going to be seeing from the handset but that doesn’t mean that Samsung’s new flagship is completely revealed. The continuing rumour is proof enough of that.

So here’s what we know so far, starting with that name:

It’s A Solid 7

Samsung new Note is going to be a Galaxy Note 7, according to noted smartphone leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks). Honestly, given his track record in previous instances and the fact that it’s just a freaking name, we’re going to consider this matter settled for now. Okay?

Specs? We’ve Got Specs

Blass, as well as several other sources, have all clubbed together to confirm a set of specs for the Galaxy Note 7 and an iris scanner – which we though would be the most unlikely addition – is one of them.

We also saw confirmation from a Chinese source (via SamMobile) of @evleaks’ full roster of specifications. A curved (this part is still a little murky) 5.7-inch Super AMOLED screen, 6GB of RAM and 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB of storage are all on the cards, with microSD space. Processor-wise, we should see an Exynos 8893 chip from Samsung themselves or a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 (2.3GHz) in some models of the handsets. Either way, it should be blisteringly fast.

Cameras Aren’t Changing Much

There’s word that Samsung will be sticking with their pared-back 12MP cameras, as well as 5MP front photographers. We’re not going to complain about that, the Galaxy S7’s camera arrangement was a high-point of the handset (along with everything else). The Note 7 will apparently have an IP68 rating out of the box, which we’re all for as well.

There are three colours expected for the Galaxy Note 7: Black, silver and blue. It’s been a while since we’ve wanted a white handset from Samsung anyway.

Confirmation And Battery

A Russian source has confirmed most of these specs, adding in a few other details. A 3,600mAh will be taking the place of the reported 4,000mAh we were expecting. The screen is reported to be 5.8-inches, a minor change over other reports but as the processor, RAM and storage claims line up, we’re probably going to see this one ironed out on announcement day.
