Telltale Games has been highly successful in its own special niche: video games that appeal to lovers of TV series and comics. The episodic format of titles such as The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones mirrors that of a TV show closely enough to keep players coming back for more – albeit at the expense them feeling more like interactive storybooks than actual “games”.
Telltale’s success has not gone unnoticed by Hollywood. Now film studio Lionsgate is investing money in the developer, to the point its CEO Jon Feltheimer will be on Telltale’s board of directors. It’s a good sign for Telltale’s next project, a “super show” that will combine game elements with a scripted TV narrative portion. “It’s not an interactive series with a show, or a TV show with a game,” says Telltale CEO Kevin Bruner, “but a story integrated in a way that only Telltale can do.”
AN IMMERSIVE TV EXPERIENCE
How will the this super show differ from Telltale’s current episodic format? Details remain a secret, but the company has revealed that updates will be released periodically – it’s not clear yet whether that means weekly (like most TV shows) or monthly (like Telltale’s current crop of games).
It’s likely too that the Lionsgate investment might result in the creation of new games based on the film company’s popular properties, which includes the likes of The Hunger Games.
With the success and proven capability of Telltale to create popular, quality content, it’ll be interesting to see how it fares with an original storyline for a change. Pricing, platforms, actual release dates and other pertinent information have yet to be revealed but they’ll definitely be something to watch for.
