The craze of listening to vinyl has never really died down, but in recent years the vinyl industry has stuck it out, making it seem like the 1960’s yet again. It had such a big effect on society today, that you can buy contemporary vinyl records at many commercial music stores.
UK company Novelia recognised that this trend is not going away and teamed up with DJ QBert to create an interactive vinyl sleeve for his Extraterrestria album. The inside of this album’s cover features a Bluetooth MIDI deck and controls which can be operated by linking it to the Algoriddim djay app, which has to be downloaded on your iOS or OS X device.
By touching the interactive, made-of-paper, MIDI DJ set, users connect directly to the app and this lets them scratch and mix any songs that are loaded onto the software. This is made possible by the use of printed capacitive touch processing and Bluetooth Start technology, something that Novelia has been working on for a while. The circuits on the paper are printed with energy-conducting ink and then the chips are programmed to create an interactive DJ deck.
Novelia just gave new purpose to the mostly uninteractive vinyl sleeve. Or anything else that can be made from paper.
