4K is the coming thing, but it seems that LG is going to be doubling that resolution for their star players at the upcoming CES event set to take place in Vegas next year.
According to a CNET report, citing “LG insiders”, the South Korean company has made arrangements to get an 8K 55-inch TV set to Las Vegas. The TV, which is apparently codenamed ‘Mabinogion’ is said to feature a resolution of 7,680 x 4,320 and, of course, it is just a prototype for now.
That might be because 8K video is currently unavailable anywhere and the company has reportedly had to generate images using an Nvidia Kepler GPU setup that hasn’t been elaborated on in order to have something to display. They’ve also ramped up the brightness of Mabinogion to 500 nits by using “…a W sub-pixel to increase the brightness.”
CNET‘s sources are reported to have said “With the know-how acquired from making the prototype, if LG finds good grounds to commercialize the display for mass production, it will do so. LG has already finished up approving the technological viability of the 55-inch, 8K display, and is now starting preparation to commercialize it to make it a product.”
So who knows? It might be that this reveal will pave the way for commercial 8K displays and TV panels in the near future. It all depends on the reception it gets at CES 2015.
