Sony’s not having a very pleasant time of late. We’re not referring to Sony Mobile, though they have had to trim some of the fat from their lineup. Nor is it Sony’s gaming arm and the PlayStation 4, that seems to be doing just fine this time. Instead it’s Sony Pictures that is experiencing the nasties.
Last week Sony Pictures experiences quite a nasty hack, one that may have been carried out by folks entering the actual building were Sony’s computers were kept. Machines were locked and internet access was killed for Sony Pictures staff and a large chunk of content was made off with.
But that’s not where it ends. Now at least five films from Sony Pictures, four of which are unreleased, have appeared online as downloads. The films (Fury, Annie, Mr. Turner, Still Alice and To Write Love On Her Arms) have all had DVD-screener versions leaked online.
Whether the DVD-screener leaks are related to the hack isn’t known at this time but it’s a bit close the physical/digital breach to be solely co-incidence.
As of yesterday, Fury had been downloaded 1.2 million times, with the other titles being in the hundreds of thousands of downloads. Sony told The Next Web “The theft of Sony Pictures Entertainment content is a criminal matter, and we are working closely with law enforcement to address it.”
