CoD: Advanced Warfare is the largest entertainment launch of 2014 – according to Activision

We were wondering when this information was going to be popping up from Activision, the publisher behind Destiny and Call of Duty. It’s almost a yearly ritual, crowing about how well the latest installment of Call of Duty – in this case the Kevin Spacey vehicle Advanced Warfare – has done in comparison to everything else on the market.

AW 3This year Activision are claiming the largest entertainment launch of 2014, a position that accounts for motion picture, book, and gaming launches over the year, though they’ve given few solid numbers to back it up. We still believe them though, Advanced Warfare seems to be doing particularly well on the review front.

Acti CEO Eric Hirshberg said “Sales and engagement are up through the first week compared to last year. Season Pass sales are up, as well. The game has been very positively reviewed and the response from fans has been tremendous. We believe Advanced Warfare will be the most successful game of the year and we thank our fans for making it the biggest entertainment launch of the year.”

What Activision haven’t done this year is mentioned how many copies of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare have sold over the first 24 hours. Last year they were breaking records (their own, and Grand Theft Auto V‘s). This might be because the monitoring of sales is usually restricted to physical copies and this year… the company’s first person shooter series became the “…highest-selling digital launch in console history according to Xbox Live, PlayStation Network and internal Activision estimates.”
