HTC One Mini 2 unveiled: like an M8, only smaller

We’re fans of the HTC One M8, but it’s fair to say that, like a lot of flagship phones, it’s a little on the large size. So today’s news that HTC is to launch a similar-but-smaller variant, the One Mini 2, is sure to be of interest to small-handed people and wearers of tight jeans alike.

The HTC One Mini 2 has a 4.5in 1280 x 720 screen, measures 137.5 x 65 x 10.6mm and weighs 137g (its big brother has a 5in 1920 x 1080 screen, measures 146 x 71 x 9.4mm and weighs 160g). It comes with 1GB of RAM and a quad-core Snapdragon 400 CPU too, which makes it slightly less powerful than the full-fat One M8.

The 16GB of storage can be bolstered with a microSD card (up to 128GB extra), and there are 13MP rear- and 5MP forward-facing cameras. The rear camera is a traditional snapper rather than the twin-lens Ultrapixel setup used by the M8.

Android 4.4 KitKat is on board with, of course, HTC’s embellishments on top. That means you get the BlinkFeed social network live stream (which we like a lot) and the Zoe app for sharing photos (which we think is OK). There are dual BoomSound speakers on the front panel, which should deliver better, beefier audio than most comparable smartphones.

HTC hasn’t revealed the price of the One Mini 2 yet, but says it will be available from June in the same three colours as the One M8: Gunmetal Grey, Glacial Silver and Amber Gold. It’s a gorgeous-looking thing, and we’ll let you know our full thoughts once we’ve had some hands-on time.
