Oppo unveils the 50 megapixel Find 7 smartphone

Chinese tech manufacturer Oppo unveiled their Find 7 handset yesterday in Beijing. The Find 7 is an Android 4.3 smartphone that is able to take 50 megapixel photos. More or less.

As great as that sounds, there is a catch. The sensor used in the phone is actually a 13MP Sony IMX 214 CMOS, so it’s all software doing the heavy lifting but, despite the marketing gimmick, the phone is still reportedly quite good.

The Find 7 comes with an image signal processer called Pure Image 2.0, which is the brains behind its 50MP prowess. The smartphone’s camera takes 10 consecutive shots very, very quickly and then picks the four best shots and combines them into a 50 megapixel still.

The Find 7 is actually the larger of a pair of phones. The Find 7a is the smaller of the two, with a Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB of system memory and 16GB of storage. The Find 7 will be using Snapdragon’s 801 CPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a 2,560 x 1,440 display, an improvement compared to the 7a’s HD panel.

Anyone interested in the phone living outside of China can reportedly order the lower-spec Find 7a online in mid-April, or if you can wait, the full Find 7 will hit shelves in May or June.
