After Project Glass, Google likely thinks that a smart contact lens is the next logical step. But, before you get too excited, the internet search company doesn’t plan to introduce Google Glass-like features to a contact lens (at least, not yet). Their smart contact lens is a little more medical in nature.
Google is working on a contact lens that will be helpful in monitoring diabetes, specifically the level of glucose in tears. The current prototype has a wireless chip and glucose sensor sitting between two layers of whatever it is they make contact lenses out of and is able to perform a single glucose reading per second. The company is looking at adding LEDs to this setup, so that the contact lens could serve as a warning system for diabetics.
This smart contact lens is a touch experimental still and Google has said that “…we plan to look for partners who are experts in bringing products like this to market. These partners will use our technology for a smart contact lens and develop apps that would make the measurements available to the wearer and their doctor.” It may take a little while to reach the market but once it does, being diabetic could become that much more manageable thanks to wearable technology.
