Canon has announced a new video camera, due to land in South Africa at the end of September, called the Legria mini. The company calls it a “digital creative camcorder” and it’s intended for folks who film themselves talking to a virtual audience.

As can be seen from the image, the Legria mini is perfect for propping on a relatively flat surface or dashboard but if that’s all there was to it the camera wouldn’t be anything special. Canon have outfitted the Legria mini with a wide-angle 12.8 MP (for still shots) f/2.8 lens, capable of shooting HD video at an angle of up to 160°.

Tapping the 2.7-inch touchscreen display reduces the filming angle to 71°, for closeups and the like, according to Canon. The touchscreen doesn’t have to be oriented towards the user however, it can be flipped to the side or the whole thing can be collapsed to form a standard forward-shooting camera.

Other features of the manipulative video recorder include Canon’s HS (high sensitivity) System, which combines a back-lit 1.2/3” CMOS sensor with Canon’s DIGIC DV 4 processor, WiFi connectivity and a range of remote viewing and video uploading options right out of the box. Pricing for the camera has not yet been announced.
