Is the end nigh for plastic? Samsung partners with carbon fiber specialist

Samsung announced a new materials partnership on Monday 24 June, which might show that the tech giant is moving away from using plastic in its Galaxy product range.

The new partnership will be known as Samsung SGL Carbon Composite Materials, and will aim to provide technology for use in the company’s consumer electronics products in the form of carbon fiber products, according to the press release.

Samsung had always defended its use of plastic in the manufacturing the Galaxy S3 and S4, saying that it enabled the company to produce handsets faster and more efficiently. However the company has been lagging behind the HTC One and iPhone 5 in terms of build quality, which may have necessitated their new partnership.
