YouTube has unveiled paid-subscription channels on their online video streaming service, a move which has been expected since at least January this year.
A pilot program was announced and launched by YouTube yesterday, with the information on the launch coming via a post on the official YouTube blog. Unfortunately the current crop of paid channels don’t appear to be available from South Africa but subscriptions to the likes of UFC Select, National Geographic Kids, Cars.TV and others will be starting from $0.99 per month.
This is just the start, according to YouTube. The blog post reads “We’ll be rolling paid channels out more broadly in the coming weeks as a self-service feature for qualifying partners. And as new channels appear, we’ll be making sure you can discover them, just as we’ve been helping you find and subscribe to all the channels you love across YouTube”. When the paid service will be making the jump over to the ocean will probably be announced in the coming months.
