SpaceX’s Grasshopper rocket test goes triple the distance

Private sparefaring company SpaceX has advanced a considerable way since their VTOL tests with the Grasshopper rocket last month. In the space of about five weeks the vertical takeoff and landing Grasshopper rocket has tripled its previous best successful takeoff and touchdown.

Previously the Grasshopper, a ten-story rocket intended to test the feasibility of reusable rockets that can be returned to the launch pad following a successful lift, had attained a height of 80 metres before touching down again. Roughly seven weeks later and the rocket has managed to reach an elevation of 250 metres, also with a successful touchdown on its launch pad.
