Makerbot intros Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner, lets you print what you already have

Makerbot, manufacturers of the Makerbot Replicator 2, unveiled a new desktop scanner at South by Southwest (SXSW) that will allow 3D printing enthusiasts to scan in and convert existing objects to 3D printing schematics.

The MakerBot Digitizer Desktop 3D Scanner is still a prototype at the moment and utilises lasers and cameras to scan an object and create a digital copy of it “without any design, CAD software or 3D modeling experience at all – and then print the item again and again on a MakerBot Replicator 2 or 2X Desktop 3D Printer”, according to Makerbot CEO Bre Pettis.

Makerbot has not mentioned how long the desktop scanner will be in development or when it will be available for purchase. Eventual pricing, of course, hasn’t been broached but hopefully it will be affordable enough to make changes to the way that 3D printing is conducted.
