There may be a shorter wait for an Ubuntu smartphone than expected. Canonical’s Mark Shuttleworth has reportedly said that the first devices based on a mobile version of the Ubuntu OS will reach consumers at the beginning of October this year.
Shuttleworth is quoted by the Wall Street Journal as giving October 2013 as the date when consumers will be able to get their hands on an Ubuntu phone, a comment which is slightly at odds with previous statements which pegged the date either in the last quarter of 2013 or the first of 2014.
Canonical has been contacted for comment on the apparent release date, which would line up with a new release of the desktop version of Ubuntu.
