Research in Motion has announced its earnings for the quarter ending 1 December 2012, reporting better than expected revenues of $2.7 billion. This amount still represents a drop of 5% over the previous quarter however and the company is down 47% over the same time last year.
RIM also reported a drop in subscribers for the first time in the company’s history, saying that their subscribers have declined from over 80 million in the last quarter to around 79 million. While not making much of a dent in their subscriber base this still represents 1 million users or so that are no longer with BlackBerry. Most of these losses apparently come from North America.
RIM is now awaiting the launch of BlackBerry 10, an event which could well decide the fate of the company. CEO Thorston Heins said “RIM continued to execute on its product roadmap plans and to deliver on key financial metrics as it gets set for the global launch of BlackBerry 10.”
“This is an exciting time and our carrier partners, application developers and employees are all looking forward to unveiling the innovation and excitement of BlackBerry 10 to our customers on 30 January 2013.”
