According to a report released by Strategy Analytics Apple’s iPad may have some serious competition from Android tablets.
The analyst group believes that Apple’s market share has fallen compared to last year on the tablet front and the slack, along with the losses seen by Microsoft-based and other tablets, has been picked up by Android devices.
Based on Apple’s Q4 financial results Strategy Analytics estimates that Apple’s tablet market share has dipped from a dominate 64.5% to 56.7% from Q3 2011 to Q3 2012. Though it still commands a lead over the Android competition, Android-based tablets have increased their share of the market over the same period, climbing from 26.2% to 41.3%. Not all of Android’s progress has been taken from Apple however, the operating system appears to have absorbed the losses seen by Microsoft, BlackBerry and others.
Those numbers will not necessarily remain in place however, the recent launch of two new iPads and Microsoft’s Surface tablet, due today, have the potential to skew the market further away from Android again.
