Amazon and Foxconn are developing a smartphone that would apparently be aimed at Apple’s share of the handset market, according to a Bloomberg report. The report cites two unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter.
Foxconn International Holdings is working with Amazon on the project, according to one of the sources. Amazon is apparently on the lookout for patents related to wireless technology say other sources, in order to protect the new hardware from claims of infringement.
Amazon has got a jump start on other companies looking to enter the smartphone arena, should the rumours of a shift to handsets be true. AllThingsD details the advantages that Amazon has, including an app store, music and movie services which would allow it to quickly compete with Apple’s iPhone on a service level.
