Microsoft’s Monday announcement has come and gone and it has brought with it some new Surface tablets from the Redmond company.
The new Windows 8-based devices were unveiled by Steve Ballmer at an event in Las Vegas and there will be two types available: Windows 8 and Windows RT models.
The Windows RT model will feature a 10.6″ touchscreen, covered by Gorilla Glass, an ARM processor and will be 0.37″ thick, almost matching the latest WiFi-only for size and weight. It will also have dual MIMO (multiple-in, multiple-out ) antennae, a camera, HDMI port and will ship in 32GB and 64GB variants.
The Windows 8 Pro model will feature a Core i5 CPU and a 10.6″ touchscreen, with 64GB and 128GB versions available. According to Microsoft the Windows 8 Pro Surface tablet will be able to handle anything that users would normally throw at a desktop system (aside from high-end gaming, we assume). It will be a little thicker than the RT model, at 0.55″.
More detailed specs and pricing were not revealed at the event, those should appear in the near future. The tablets are expected to become available later this year.
